Researchers 3D Print Experimental Wind Turbine in Russia's Kaliningrad Region

The prototype was built to test wind turbine performance under a variety of operating conditions.

Researchers at the Astrophysics Laboratory of Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University have developed an experimental vertical-axis wind turbine using additive manufacturing. All of the turbine's primary components—including the blades and mounting hardware—were produced with a 3D printer.

Before building the prototype, the research team carried out detailed mathematical modeling of the atmospheric boundary layer over the Kaliningrad Region. Their findings indicate that the region has strong wind energy potential. Based on the analysis, the researchers concluded that the most suitable locations for the turbines are coastal areas approximately 10 kilometers inland from the shoreline.

The prototype was built to validate the mathematical model. Small vertical-axis wind turbines are well suited to this type of testing because they are more compact, lighter, and safer than conventional horizontal-axis designs with large three-bladed rotors. The blades were also designed as modular components, allowing them to be quickly replaced to evaluate the turbine under different operating conditions.
