In Russia, AI Interprets Geological Data Alongside Human Geologists

Using neural networks has brought the start of field development forward by roughly a year.

Artificial intelligence has significantly shortened the lifecycle of geological exploration projects, according to Yury Masalkin, director of exploration at Gazprom Neft, speaking in an interview with InfoTEK.

He said intelligent algorithms helped move the start of field development forward by about a year by accelerating the interpretation of seismic survey results.

“In 2025, we used AI to automate the interpretation of horizons and the identification of faults. That improved result quality and sped up the transition to the next stages of building a 3D reservoir model. Previously, several geologists had to interpret 100 percent of the data over six months. Now, a single specialist interprets 1 to 2 percent and trains the AI, which processes the remaining 98 percent. The entire process takes two weeks,” Masalkin explained

Technology Opens New Prospects

The exploration chief added that AI makes it possible to take a fresh look at areas that once seemed thoroughly studied, such as the Volga-Ural petroleum province and Western Siberia.

Even as the size of newly discovered fields and the quality of reserves decline worldwide, the emergence of technologies capable of bringing smaller deposits into efficient production is creating a measure of optimism.

Where traditional methods fall short, digital tools step in. They can detect patterns across massive datasets drawn from different types of geological exploration, enabling insights that were previously out of reach.
