Researchers at South Ural State University have developed a fully automated postal warehouse designed to serve as a foundation for drone-based parcel delivery systems.

According to the project team, current drone mail delivery systems worldwide still rely on human operators. Fully autonomous solutions have yet to be implemented, but the researchers say their work marks a significant step toward solving that challenge.

At this stage, the warehouse exists as a full-scale test platform. Parcels of different sizes are loaded into designated cells, and upon receiving a command, a robot transfers the shipment to a conveyor that moves it to a drone landing point. A drone then picks up the package.

“In a future version of the robotic mail delivery system, the package will be collected by a quadcopter robot that can position itself in space, scan a QR code on the parcel, and deliver it to the recipient autonomously,” the university said.

Flight testing is expected to begin this summer.
