At Perm National Research Polytechnic University, students are studying engineering and IT disciplines with the help of a humanoid robot, the university’s press service said. Ardi, developed by Promobot, can speak, gesture and change facial expressions. According to Promobot CEO Maxim Chugunov, Russia would need to increase production of “smart machines” ninefold to enter the world’s top 25 countries by robot density. That effort, he said, also requires specialists trained to operate them.

“Training in robotics using domestic equipment is therefore a strategic priority,” he said. “Students who work with Russian-made robots adapt more quickly to industrial tasks and to working with domestic hardware.”

Built on a Domestic Platform

Perm National Research Polytechnic University has, for the first time, structured its educational process entirely on a domestic platform. Using Ardi, students study robotics, mechatronics, computer vision and neural network technologies. The university has developed a dedicated teaching and methodology package along with professional development tools that provide direct access to robot control at the ROS2 operating system level.

As Alexander Trufanov, First Vice Rector – Vice Rector for Digitalization at Perm National Research Polytechnic University, noted, the ability to work with anthropomorphic robotic platforms is an important skill for future IT specialists.

“This approach will help graduates of Perm Polytechnic build not only strong professional competencies but also systems thinking and the ability to design complex technological systems,” he said.
