Yandex Maps and Yandex Navigator have introduced personalized routing powered by artificial intelligence, the company’s press service said.

AI-generated routes are tailored to individual drivers. A machine learning model analyzes routing options along with aggregated data on how a specific user interacts with the service. The algorithm takes into account how often a driver changes routes, where they tend to travel most frequently, and the distances they typically cover.

Looking at Driving History

For new drivers, instead of the default fastest route, the system may suggest a simpler path with fewer complex interchanges and left turns. For routine trips, such as commuting from home to work, the model can prioritize familiar roads. When traveling across the city, it may offer alternative options, including routes through the center or bypass roads.

“We understand that travel time is not always the decisive factor for drivers. For example, those who have recently started driving may prefer a route with the fewest complex turns. And for regular trips between home and work, drivers often value familiarity over speed. Now Maps takes this context into account when building routes,” said Ruslan Ledovsky, head of the navigation team at Yandex Maps.

So far, the services can recommend more than 10 types of personalized routes, with additional variations planned in the future.
