The functionality of the Gorodovoy system, used to detect urban maintenance violations in St. Petersburg, is set to expand, Pavel Romanov, head of the press service of the State Administrative and Technical Inspectorate, told Business FM St. Petersburg.

The AI will now be able to identify overflowing trash bins at shopping center entrances. Previously, the system was limited to detecting graffiti, air conditioning units on building facades and potholes on roads.

An Essential Tool

According to Romanov, St. Petersburg began using AI to monitor urban infrastructure in 2023. Today, the system can inspect thousands of sites per day and notify property owners about violations.

“This year, the inspectorate plans to train the neural network to recognize new categories of administrative violations, such as overflowing trash bins at shopping center entrances, construction scaffolding without permits and road subsidence within warranty periods. The scope of violations the system can detect is limited by the inspectorate’s authority. However, we work closely with other government agencies, sharing data from AI systems and helping identify violations within their jurisdiction,” Romanov said.

Earlier, eight Gorodovoy systems were used in St. Petersburg to manage snowfall, focusing on buildings where falling snow and icicles had previously been recorded.
